To Anchor in the Port of Livorno

Anchoring during your cruise vacation in the port of Livorno and want to experience the best that Tuscany has to offer in one day?

Join us for an unforgettable experience of beach tours in the Tuscany region, one of the most beautiful regions in Italy and in the whole world, a source of inspiration for film directors, writers, artists and anyone who longs for pure beauty, art, silence, spaces and good food.

Tuscany is famous all over the world for many reasons: first of course, its picturesque beauty. This region of the country includes not only the famous hills and valleys, but also the impressive coastal strip and its small and exotic villages. It is hard to think of an area where so much beauty and culture is concentrated in a small radius. In addition, the region is saturated with a rich and important political history, with the central seal obviously remaining conspicuous – towns and cities protected by high walls and their ancient center built of stone houses, alleys and fortified castles. Tuscany nowadays is of course quiet and pastoral, but during the Middle Ages and later the region knew many wars, between one city and another (Florence and Siena for example) and between the supporters of the Papal State (Guelfi) and the supporters of the Byzantine Empire (Ghibellini).

As you know, the Renaissance period symbolized Florence as the center of the artistic life of Italy, and one could say of the entire world. The city was full of Botteghe – that is, “shops” where famous artists and their apprentices, young boys who helped the artisans and learned every detail, sat day and night.

The artistic life merged with the political life naturally, when nobles and clergy understood the importance and value of the works of art, and the sublime result we get to see nowadays in the form of cities and towns that are pearls of unique beauty.

Tuscany is intriguing and loved by everyone, adults and children, art lovers as well as connoisseurs. We at Romio invite you to join the local and high-quality driver team we have built, and take advantage of your mooring at the port of Livorno for a day trip experience that will be etched in your memory and heart.

We have built for you several convenient and fun routes for a day trip, for about eight hours. Our drivers will be happy to serve you courteously from the time you leave the ship in the morning until the end of the day.

Excursión 1: Pisa y Florencia

Pick up around 9 am. Our driver will be waiting for you at the exit from the ship in the port of Livorno. Our driver will be waiting for you with a ROMIO sign at the exit of the ship. From the port of Livorno we will go to the famous city of Pisa. Pisa is of course known for its leaning tower, the Tower of Pisa – La Torre Di Pisa. The tower was built between the 12th century and the 14th century, and already in the early stages of its construction, part of the ground on which it stands was dropped, hence its inclination, which turned the tower (which originally formed the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Assunta) and with it the square that completely surrounds it – “The Square of Miracles” – Piazza Dei Miracoli, for celebrities all over the world.

In Pisa we recommend stopping for an hour or two (depending on your pace) and then continuing the journey to the capital of the region – the city of Florence. The trip from Pisa to Florence will take about an hour and a half, so it is estimated that the arrival in Florence will be around 12:00-13:00 noon.

In Florence, you can go for a walk in the city center (it’s walking distance) and walk between the famous squares and sites of this wonderful city. San Lorenzo Church, Signoria Square and the charming goldsmiths’ bridge over the Arno River – Il Ponte Vecchio. A trip to Florence can last between 3-4 hours, of course without entry to museums and other sites, due to time restrictions.

At the end of the day full of experiences, at around 16:00-16:30 you will start leaving Florence towards the port of Livorno, for a journey of about an hour and a half. Arrival in Livorno (tired but satisfied!) around 18:00 in the evening to continue the cruise.

Route 2: Short trip 6-7 hours: Pisa and Lucca

Pick up around 9 am from the departure of the ship in the port of Livorno.

In Pisa, we recommend stopping for an hour or two (depending on your pace) and then continue driving to a nearby and charming city – Lucca. The drive from Pisa to Lucca takes about 30-40 minutes. Lucca was a Roman city, and to this day you can notice this by strolling through the city center. You can admire the impressive Giuniji Tower and the ancient Roman amphitheater. The city center alleys are bustling with life and you can find countless quality local restaurants and elegant shops. A visit to Lucca can take about 3-4 hours.

Later in the day from Lucca back to the port in Livorno, about an hour’s drive.

Route 3: Volterra and San Gimignano

Pick up from Livorno port around 9 am and departure for a day trip following two of the most beautiful and famous towns in Tuscany: Volterra, and San Gimignano – San Gimignano, the town of towers. Here you can gain the ultimate experience of a small town with a rich history, narrow alleys, stone houses that lead to small local centers that were a meeting place, these are the piazzas – the squares of the town.

The drive from Livorno to Volterra takes about an hour and a half. Volterra is an Etruscan city in origin, one of the most important cities of this ancient people, and it has been known since the dawn of history for the alabaster mineral that is found in the caves surrounding the town, and which helped to establish the local economy for many centuries. Volterra was dominant in the Middle Ages with its strong and proud army which, despite its numerical inferiority, was able to protect the city many times from invasions by foreign cities. The town is full of remains from different periods, Etruscan, Roman, Florentine.

You can also enter the municipal museum in order to witness the art treasures that have been preserved over the years. From Volterra we will continue to the charming town of San Gimignano, it also involves many styles that reflect many centuries of rich history, wars between armies (the medieval period when each city had its own army and regime), alliances and status battles between nobles, warriors, free professionals and the proletariat. San Geminiano is especially known for its many towers (currently there are 14) and it is also called “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”. Culinary lovers will also be able to find many high-quality shops selling local groceries in “Kilometro 0”, that is, authentic local products: olive oil, wines, cheeses, sausages, jams and sauces, and much more.

At the end of this rich day, we will return to the port of Livorno, until 18:00 in the evening, for the continuation of the voyage.
